Freedom: How I Have It and Why I Want It

 

            “Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.” – Pope John Paul II

       Freedom is a beautiful word. Freedom is a tremendous privilege. Freedom is an awesome responsibility. It’s a hard word to grasp really. Maybe we think we know what it is, but do we really? Is freedom total unrestraint? The child who is allowed to eat whatever they choose whenever they choose, go to sleep and wake up whenever they want, do their homework or not, decide when they want to obey their parents, and make every other decision totally without boundaries is free…or not? Is freedom the power to choose within a line of fundamental truths? There is only one right answer, but I leave the decision for you to make for yourself. Do you have a dream? Is there a longing deep inside of you to achieve something and make something of yourself? Maybe that dream has become a little dim or distorted with all the pressures of life, but on those days when the sky is extra blue or a brilliant rainbow stretches across the horizon you let yourself believe again just for a little bit in yourself and your dream. Getting Off The Hamster Wheel

 

Do you get tired of running and running but not going anywhere? Are you frustrated that every day is spent maintaining the status quo giving you no time to reach for your dreams? When I was a kid, we almost always had a pet hamster. Hamsters are so funny because they will hop into their little wheel and run with all their might for a few minutes. Then they hop back out again acting so proud of themselves for running so far when really they are in the exact same spot they started out from. It might be ok for hamsters, but we are intelligent enough that running day after day without getting anywhere causes boredom and frustration very easily.
